Contacts scrapping the latest spam?
With the explosion in large social networking sites around the globe, comes ever increasing competition for membership. Competition always ramps up with tactics owners will go to in order to get you to join their ranks of millions. This has led to the latest tactic of “contacts scrapping”.
So what is contact scrapping? Well basically you will from time to time get an email from what you think is one of your friends, usually asking you to sign up to view some pictures that “they really want you to see”. Well the problem is that this email typically hasn’t been sent by your friend, but rather by a social site that has accessed your friends email contacts list and sent out an email “on their behalf”. It’s important to note here, that we are not for one moment suggesting that this is in anyway an illegal act, but merely that when and of you do sign up to a social network it’s important to read the terms and conditions carefully before you give them your email address and password.
How it works it simple, once you agree to their term and conditions and hand over your email address and password, the site automatically accesses your contacts list and sends an email inviting your friends to join you on their network. As your friends sign up they are subject to the same system, meaning the site mails out to huge quanitities of people in a very short space of time. Whilst to many people this might be fine and ok, others will see it as not only an invasion of privacy, but misleading and even embarrasing, so you have been warned think carefully before you sign up to anything, especially off the back of an email. A common sense approach to everything on the internet is recommended if you want to learn more about How to check if an email is a fraud or How to Protect your Computer from Internet Security Threats visit the main site.
